Astatos grew up as the son of a woodsman named Baldor. Baldor was a somber man who spoke little and drank much. Astatos had only fleeting memories of his mother, faint memories of a face and a voice. Whenever Astatos quired his father about his absent mother, his father simply grumbled and said she left a few years after he was born, and said no more. They traveled the land trading between towns earning a meager living and spending a majority of time assisting his father hunting. Baldor's frequent trade with merchants earned him an uncanny ability of persuasion that his son learned in turn. Magicks imbued themselves in the boy sporadically throughout his growing years. Fearing what reaction these newfound powers might provoke from his father, Astatos studied in secrecy. When he was discovered practicing magic, Baldor went into a drunk rage, beating the boy severely hurting the boy. The man's slurred shouting revealed that Astatos' mother had been killed by a sorcerer who served the Lord Darken Rahl. Astatos burned with rage at this revelation, and subdued his father with his augmented power. When Astatos demanded to know more about his mother's killer, his father obliged out of fear; the killer was an enforcer sent out to towns to ensure the rule of the new lord was followed. When his mother argued that the new laws were unfair, the sorcerer killed her as an example of what would happen to those who opposed the new rule. His father recalled the sorcerer as a tall black haired man with cold grey eyes and a evil looking crow on his shoulder. Soon after learning this the then youth left his father out of fear and so he could continue to practice his arcane powers openly.
Astatos settled down and found work as an assistant in a pub. When word reached his ears that a woodsman was passing through town, he thought nothing of it until his father walked through the door to the pub where he worked. Their reunion was unusually awkward at first, but both of them had set their ill feelings aside after their years apart. They talked long into the night, finally retiring just as the morning drew close. Astatos woke to loud noises, and rushed to find what was the matter. In room his father had rented, he found three soldiers in the room his father had rented for the night, on the floor was his father, strewn awkwardly across the floor, blood everywhere. The soldiers turned and explained that the man they just killed was a lowlife that had refused to pay taxes for years. Rage gripped Astatos and he killed the men with impunity.
Astatos then set forth to find the elves, the few that opposed the lord and possibly his only source of allies.
